Martha Rhodes Barr
A graveside service will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton on Thursday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William Collins officiating. Friends will be received at graveside visitation beginning at 10:30 prior to the service.
Ms. Barr was born December 12, 1924 in Taliaferro County to the late William Holcomb and Viola Bracey Rhodes and grew up in Crawfordville. She attended Bessie Tift College, now known as Tift College, where she received an associate's degree. She then moved to Atlanta to work for Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company where she met her future husband, Marcus H. Barr. They moved to Tifton in 1946. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Beacon Sunday School Class, the UMW and the Ladies Circle. During her lifetime she was a garden club member, a member of the Tifton Woman's Club, and she served as a Pink Lady at Tift General Hospital. Ms. Barr was also a dedicated Brownie and Girl Scout leader in Tifton for many years.
While raising her children she enjoyed being a homemaker and a stay-at-home mother.
Later she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper, an EKG technician, and for many years as an independent insurance agent.
Ms. Barr had a wide variety of interests which included gardening, cooking, arts and crafts and playing the piano. She also enjoyed traveling and meeting people. Always interested in learning new things, she continued her education through the years auditing many classes at ABAC.
But her greatest joys in life were her children! She devoted her life to them, teaching them to love God, his word, and his church. She instilled in them a strong faith in God, the importance of prayer, memorizing God's word and the importance of serving God and others.
Ms. Barr is survived by her son, Marcus H. Barr Jr.(Teesa) of Albany; her daughters, Beverly Barr McRae (Mike) of Cedartown and Betty Lou Barr Hyatt (Charles) of Jacksonville, Florida; five grandchildren, Emily Barr Patterson (Joe) of St. Augustine, Florida, Ashley McRae Kersey (Doug) of LaGrange, Bobby McRae (Jessica) of Kennesaw, Julie Anne McRae Waterfield (Matt) of Steilacoom, Washington, and Kelly Hyatt Baker (Rob) of Orlando, Florida; and 10 great-grandchildren.
