OCHLOCKONEE BAY, FLA. -- Charles "Charlie" Franklin Powell of Ochlockonee Bay (Panacea), Fla., passed away on Dec. 19, 2016 at his home after a short illness. Mr. Powell was born Aug. 16, 1944 in Tifton, Ga., the son of Glen Powell and Winona Norman Powell, both deceased. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Powell. He attended the University of Georgia and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. After graduating from the University of Georgia, he joined his father in the farming business as a partner in Powell Farms located in Omega, Ga. His skills at growing sweet onions were enjoyed by many. He was engaged in his retail business, The Treasure Chest, in Tallahassee, Fla., since 1984 until his death. He was a collector of specialty items and had a wide range of interests. During his lifetime he was an avid reader of many subjects and recently focusing on seafood cookbooks. He was a devoted family man who loved his family. Mr. Powell is survived by Carol Wise Powell of Moultrie, Ga., and Ocklockonee Bay, Fla., two daughters and son-in-law, Christa and Joseph Weathers of Moultrie, Ga., and Adrienne Keyes Powell of Marietta, Ga.; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Sarah Powell of Tifton, Ga.; 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Lyn and Phil McKenzie of Atlanta, Ga. and Glennis and Ed Sykes of Fernandina, Fla., and a sister-in-law Ann Powell of California, Md.; one granddaughter Heather M. Hutto and husband Trey of Doerun, Ga.; three great grandsons, Luke, Lane and Landon Hutto; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and his Schnauzer, Bailey. The family will have a celebration of life Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016 at 5:30 PM at the Omega Community Center in Omega, Ga. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Interment arrangements have been entrusted to Cobb Funeral Chapel of Moultrie, Ga.
