James Caylor Mark
James Caylor "Jim" Mark, 86, of Winter Haven, Florida went to be with his Lord and Savior January 31, 2020 following a short illness. Born October 14, 1933 in Hampton, Virginia, Jim was a graduate of Hampton High School and later earned a degree in Psychology from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. While at William and Mary, Jim was an officer in the college ROTC Unit and a Captain of the Indian golf team.
Following graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Army where he was commissioned a Captain. He became an Army aviator and spent the next 15 years proudly serving his country, which included two separate tours of Vietnam.
In 1962 Jim met and married the love of his life, Patricia McCurdy. Their son Tom was born in 1963. Daughter Melanie came along in 1964.
After leaving the Army at the end of Vietnam conflict as a Lt Colonel, Jim retuned to William and Mary where he earned his Master's Degree in Education, which led him into the high school classroom as a vocational education teacher at Tabb High School in Tabb, Virginia. During this time Jim also became a small business owner as he opened an Arnold Palmer Driving Range and Miniature Golf Course in Grafton, Virginia. Later changing the name to Easy Swing Driving Range and Miniature Golf, Jim, Patricia, and their children would own and operate the business for ten years.
Leaving the field of education, Jim returned to his roots taking a position with the City of Hampton as the Manager of the Hampton City Golf Club, a position he would hold until his retirement 1996.
Along with being an avid golfer, Jim enjoyed flying and being a flight instructor. He was an instructor with Aero Club at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton and later with the Moore County Regional Airport in Moore County, North Carolina.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Charles Marvin Mark and Mildred Caylor Mark, his sisters Mildred Warren and Marguerite "Maggie" Morrow, and bothers Charlie Mark and Joe Mark.
Jim is survived by his wife Patricia, his son Tom Mark, daughter Melanie Mark, and his granddaughter Caylor Rae Mark.
The family will hold a memorial service and celebration of Jim's life Saturday, February 22 at the Lake Ashton Community Center in Winter Haven, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make a donation of support to Good Shepherd Hospice, 450 Arneson Road, Auburndale, Florida 33823.
