Larry Eugene Holmes
Mr. Larry Eugene Holmes, 69, of Hephzibah, Georgia entered eternal rest on Friday, November 8, 2019 at The Place at Dean's Bridge in Augusta, Georgia.
A visitation will be Friday, November 15, 5-7 p.m, at Frank and Solomon Nixon Funeral Home Chapel, 2700 South Park Avenue, Tifton, Georgia 31794. The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 16 at 1 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2110 South Park Avenue, Tifton, Georgia 31794. Interment will occur at Tift Memorial Gardens, 1754 US Highway 82 East, Tifton, Georgia 31794. The repast will be at the Mount Zion Baptist Church Annex, 2110 South Park Avenue

Larry was born in November 5, 1950 in Tifton, Georgia to the late Ethel Cobb Holmes and Reverend Pleamon Lee Holmes in Tifton, Georgia.
Larry completed his elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Tift County. He attended Wilson High School where he received his high school diploma in the class of 1968. Immediately after high school, Larry entered the Marine Corp and served a term in Vietnam. After returning home, in 1969, he attended Albany Technical College where he obtained an electrician diploma. He later attended college at Fort Valley State University as well as Maryland University, as a Political Science major. In 1971, Larry decided to serve our country again and re-enlist in the US Army.
Larry begin his career in the US Army in communication, became a drill sergeant and achieved the rank of Staff sergeant E6 prior to retiring. During his 20+ year military career, he obtained several noteworthy achievements. After capturing 40 prisoners during combat in Vietnam, he was awarded the Lyndon B. Johnson Military Plaque. He was later awarded a bronze star and also received the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Air Assault Badge/Overseas Service Ribbon and Expert Rifle honor.
Larry was a childhood member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. After retiring from the military, Larry moved to Miami, Florida and frequented New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend Nathanial C. Holmes (his brother). Later, he began the process of becoming a deacon at New Corinth Missionary Baptist Church in Miami, Florida.
Larry brightened up every room with his voice, laugh and smile. His "swag" was reflected in every shirt, pants and shoe he wore. He was "Dr. Ice, twice so nice, to "Big" to go around, to "Tall" to get under." He captured the room with his charm.
On November 8, 2019, God called his soldier home to join the immortal ranks at The Place at Deans Bridge in Augusta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Katherine Holmes, Rudine Holmes Williams and Naomi Holmes and brothers Wallace Holmes and Macheal Holmes.
He leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Gail Holmes; sons, Xavier (April) Holmes, Lavito (Sheena) Holmes, L'Marquis (Jasmine) Holmes, Demetric Blocker; daughters Lovecia (Dessie) Holmes- Ogelsby, Kimberly Blocker and Brittney Blocker; step-sons, Cornill Mobley and Eric Mobley; a brother, Rev. Nathaniel (Ann) Holmes; sisters, Helen Adkins, Bertha Blanchard, Nadine Pittman, Rev. Mildred (James Alfred) Denson and Alnita (Quintin) Foster; ten grandchildren, Nia Holmes, Jaylen Holmes, Brielle Holmes, Chase Holmes, Destinee Oglesby, Brayden Holmes, Karlie Rae Holmes, Tantinia Mobley, Taylor Holmes and Tyler Holmes and one great-grandson Khristain King, Jr. He leaves a host of niecies, nephews, family and friends to cherish his memory. He will forever sing on in our memories.
