DAVENPORT, Iowa - Winifred L. " Win" Nichols, 87, of Davenport, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center, Davenport. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the First Presbyterian Church, Tifton. Burial will be Tuesday in the National Cemetery, Andersonville, with military honors by the Fort Benning Army Corps. Heritage Memorial Funeral Home, Warner Robins is assisting the family with local arrangements.


Win was born in 1920 to Clarence and Fanny Hallam, both deceased, in Ithaca, N.Y. She married Maron J. Nichols on October 8, 1950 in Las Vegas, Nev. He died Oct. 12, 1989. During World War II, Win served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, in the African and European Theaters. Following her honorable discharge, she worked as a legal secretary for the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Agronomy Department, from which she retired in 1985. She was the secretary of First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member, until her retirement in 1997 at age 76. Among her wide and varied interests, she enjoyed music, history - especially that of the American Indians, travel, sewing and making quilts and afghans.


Survivors include her daughter, Lee (John) Bailey and her son, Brian Nichols, all of Bettendorf, Iowa; grandson, Westley Allen Bailey; brother, Rylan J. (Charlotte) Hallam of Montour Falls, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Vivian Kemp, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas and various nieces and nephews.
